I wanted to learn more about the nuts and bolts of corporate lobbying, so I did more research. Solid research involves working as many angles as possible, which is how I ended up at the American League of Lobbyists website. Here’s their mission statement:
“Established in 1979 as a nonprofit organization, The American League of Lobbyists (ALL) is the national professional association dedicated exclusively to lobbying. ALL’s mission is to enhance the development of professionalism, competence and high ethical standards for advocates in the public policy arena, and to collectively address challenges affecting the first amendment right to “petition the government for redress of grievances.”
Yeah, I snorted in disbelief too. Professionalism, competence, and ethical standards are assuredly NOT the first three words that come to mind when I think about professional lobbying. But wait, it gets better. I found their video. See, they want to dispel all the myths we have about lobbying and how evil it is. So they made a video on their site and put it up on Youtube.
They want us to understand that what they do is no different from a citizen visiting their elected official or a parent speaking up at a school board meeting. One of the big ideas they want you to take away from watching? Without lobbying, our First Amendment rights would be almost impossible to express. Especially the part about petitioning the government.
Watch it yourself….
