That’s a big declaration, isn’t it? But it’s not for the reasons you might think. Sure, most of us think of kosher laws as applying only to food. But they actually apply to many different parts of observant Jewish folk’s lives. And now, a group of rabbis has decided to declare Hyatt a non-kosher chain because of their labor violations and inhumane employee treatment.
From the Unite Here article:
“Clergy in the report focus on four areas of concern with Hyatt’s business practices: subcontracting, housekeeper injuries, employer interference in organizing efforts by non-union Hyatt workers, and efforts by Hyatt to divide its employees. In accordance with Jewish legal tradition, Jewish clergy who produced this report identify Hyatt’s mistreatment of workers as Biblically prohibited oshek/oppression. At properties where workers have called for boycotts, these Jewish clergy pledge, “to treat the Hyatt as lo kasher/not kosher for events and celebrations until it treats its workers with justice.””
In the larger report, Open The Gates of Justice, there are also Torah and Talmud references provided for those who want to do a deeper study about Scripture and labor rights.
Here’s the report:
Just a quick hit up. According to news outlets, Kristene Chapa has been discharged from the hospital. She is the sole survivor of the hate motivated (cause c’mon we know that’s what’s up) attack on her and her girlfriend in Portland Texas.
There’s been a donation page set up to help the family. This young lady has a lot of rehab therapy she has to go through as a result of this crime: https://www.wepay.com/donations/127673
She’s also helped police put together a new sketch of the suspect they need to nab for this. Here it is:

Suspect In Murder of Texas Teen Couple
This will be a short post. I realized that I got so excited over the Supreme Court’s ruling mandatory Life Without Parole sentencing for juveniles unconstitutional I forgot to give you the text like I usually do. So, without further delay, here is the decision in Miller v. Alabama.
Here’s hoping it saves Cristian Fernandez from a terrible fate.
