Mass shootings again this week, and black communities are dealing with the impacts of more folks murdered by police. The air is heavy with every kind of feeling. Still, some jackasses say this isn’t the time to talk about guns.
But guns have never been separate from race in America. It goes much further back than Reagan signing the Mulford Act to stop the Black Panthers from carrying guns in the 60s. To see even a sliver of it, you have to go all the way back to the founding of the country. I brought in this little cartoon to drop that knowledge.
You know, a lot of folks still believe that the Internet is some sort of utopia. There’s this idea that everything is equal. That no one knows who you are, so no one is hateful, or racist, or anything mean. Well, anyone who’s ever wandered through a comments section, especially on Yahoo, knows this just isn’t so.
On the site Womanist Musings, I saw a video today that puts it into context. Here it is:
I’ve learned a bit about something from reading books, hanging out on websites like Womanist Musings, and my relationship with Mrs Linc: there’s a lot of complicated politics around black women’s hair, and white folks don’t know *^$# about it. Plus apparently white people also have no home training at all. I believe it.
Please, white folks, stop petting black women’s hair. You’re not at a zoo. It’s rude. And so are the constant questions. Read some things! And in the meantime, enjoy this hair basics video that Melissa Harris-Perry has been nice enough to provide you:

Gee, who would have thought George Zimmerman was a huge lier?
As most of the world knows by now, he’s had his bond revoked and has to turn himself in by Sunday. Of course he gets a ton of time to report back instead of having to come back to jail immediately like any other person. Must be nice to have friends in high places.
I won’t say too much else, just show you the actual court filing. Here in these papers, you can see the extent of the lies he and his wife told. They also have transcripts of jail conversations the two of them have had.
Whiteness as a race is a social construct that relies on several systems to stay in control of our society. Sometimes it is hidden, sometimes it is openly violent. Dr. Marimba Ani has written a book that has become a core standard read. It’s called Yurugu, and her book shows us what white culture of destruction looks like. I’m working my way through it, and recommend it to everyone.
Here she is doing an interview, and she touches on some of the concepts in the book.If you’re super impatient, the most important part starts at 3:00 in.
A more in depth interview that really lays things out can be found here:
Enjoy the videos. FYI, racism and global white supremacy are very much real things in the world. Comments left here that want to debate that point or tell me it doesn’t exist will be deleted as soon as I see them.
If you haven’t really thought much about racism, race issues, and whiteness until this moment in time, awesome. Now you can start.
