Whiteness as a race is a social construct that relies on several systems to stay in control of our society. Sometimes it is hidden, sometimes it is openly violent. Dr. Marimba Ani has written a book that has become a core standard read. It’s called Yurugu, and her book shows us what white culture of destruction looks like. I’m working my way through it, and recommend it to everyone.
Here she is doing an interview, and she touches on some of the concepts in the book.If you’re super impatient, the most important part starts at 3:00 in.
A more in depth interview that really lays things out can be found here:
Enjoy the videos. FYI, racism and global white supremacy are very much real things in the world. Comments left here that want to debate that point or tell me it doesn’t exist will be deleted as soon as I see them.
If you haven’t really thought much about racism, race issues, and whiteness until this moment in time, awesome. Now you can start.
Trans women experience a high rate of sexual assault, and oftentimes discussion of it is swept away and never discussed in detail. Catharsis Project wants to change all that. They’re asking for women to come forward and tell their stories. Folks can be anonymous if they need to.

And now I have another treat for you. The link below will get you the free AUDIO download for Ready Player One! Enjoy!
And here’s the book’s Facebook page, in case you’re curious. 🙂
I’m always on the lookout for a new book to read. This one seems really interesting. Boing Boing was the site that put me on to it. It’s a science fiction book called Ready Player One. In this article http://bit.ly/pUsbgs a member of their team gives the book a great review. Here’s a quick description of the book:
“Cline’s first novel starts out in the year 2044. The Great Recession (the same one we are in right now) is in its third decade. Unemployment is higher than ever (there’s a two-year wait for a job at fast food chain restaurants), liquid fuel is extremely scarce, the climate is in awful shape, and famine, disease, and poverty are rampant across the planet.
The story is told by Wade Watts, an 18-year-old orphan who lives with 16 other people in trailer near the top of a tall stack of trailers in a crowded, crime-ridden trailer park on the outskirts of Oklahoma City (the suburbs are deserted, because hardly anyone can afford to buy fuel to travel by car). He doesn’t remember his father, who was shot by cops who caught him looting a grocery store for food after a power outage. And his mother overdosed on adulterated drugs when he was a kid. Wade now lives with his hateful young aunt and her creepy, fresh-out-of-prison boyfriend. They allow Wade to live in the trailer only because he’s worth a weekly ration of food vouchers.”
So I followed the link at the end of the article to download the preview of the first three chapters. It’s pretty awesome! Just thought I’d pass it along.
Here’s the download link:
Thanks to Anderson Cooper’s Ridiculist spot for almost single handedly blowing my brain apart today. I’m not even sure where to start with this little gem of knowledge. But apparently Chris Brown is going to be in a movie soon. A romantic comedy about relationships. Based on a book that’s supposed to show women how men think and what they want in a relationship.
Steve Harvey’s book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is the book the movie is based on. In a short blurb from poptopictv, I get the feeling that the movie is basically a really long commercial for the book. Here’s the plot summary: ” The film adaptation, titled “Think Like a Man,” will center on four friends who have their love lives shaken up when the women they are pursuing buy Steve Harvey’s book and start considering his advice.”
Will there be much plot beyond that?
If you’re anything like me, and like to hunt through used book stores when you’re bored, then I’m sure you’ve seen the piles and piles of romance novels. They multiply like Gremlins, and lean over everything.
I’ve often wondered where they go once the store owners get tired of how much space they’re losing to these books no one seems to want anymore. And lo, I stumbled upon the answer tonight: Ebay.
Yes, Ebay, being the cultural goldmine that it is, is the final resting place for those lonely little books. If you search their book section under “lots”, you’ll find them pictured in large groups. Like older pets at a shelter, they sit waiting and hoping for a good home. See for yourself: http://bit.ly/pi8wZQ .
That’s all. Nothing earth shattering or deep tonight. Just the answer to a question I’ve mulled over from time to time.
